Archive for March, 2012
It’s only about four weeks to planting time for these orange giants! Where has the winter gone? In all honesty, I hardly remember having a winter season in 2012! Our weather has been strange this year and I’m certain Mother Nature has more surprises in store for us here in Kansas. One night with hail and rain and then waking up to a layer of snow; the week prior was giving us tornadoes and horrendous winds…and now the sun is shining with no wind whatsoever!
This week will bring Carroll’s sister Viv and brother in law Hank to the farm to get the dried gourds out of the field with us. It’s always fun to share gourd stories with Hank, the other “gourdener” in the Walters’ family. We have some fun ideas for new projects this year and can hardly wait to get started here at the Walters’ Pumpkin Patch. I think we might be one of the few farms that even grow gourds in Kansas!
We’re moving the pumpkin patch and the corn maze to different fields this spring. I thought I was doing the apple trees a favor, when Amy and I got the nippers and started pruning. Hopefully the trees will recover this year, and produce again in the next couple of years! We really whomped them!
We’re going to hold a job fair this summer to find and hire enough new employees for our fall season. The majority of our employees will work on the weekends for six weeks, and we’ll need to hire a few people to help us during the week too at our Kansas agritourism facility. So keep us in mind if you’re looking for employment for six weeks during our Pumpkin Fest 2012. But we’ll have a booth at the upcoming Women’s Fair at Butler Community College on March 31st. We’ll have some of our gourds with us for sale then. And we’ll be participating with the El Dorado Farmer’s Market beginning in May at the Walnut Valley Meat Locker south of El Dorado right out South Main Street. Come see us at one of these locations this spring! Until next time…..we’re thinking pumpkins!
